Uganda Cranes Qualify for Africa Cup of Nations After Thrilling Victory
The Uganda Cranes have secured their place in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Sudan in their final qualifying match at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. The win ensures Uganda's return to the continental tournament after missing the previous edition.
Match Highlights
The match was filled with tension as Uganda needed at least a draw to qualify. After a goalless first half, South Sudan took a surprising lead in the 58th minute through a counterattack finished by James Mading. The goal stunned the home crowd and put Uganda's qualification in jeopardy.
However, the Cranes responded brilliantly, with captain Emmanuel Okwi equalizing in the 72nd minute from a well-executed free kick. The stadium erupted in the 89th minute when Fahad Bayo headed in the winning goal from a corner, securing Uganda's qualification.
Uganda Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic expressed his pride in the team's performance: "The boys showed great character today. When we went behind, they didn't panic but kept playing our game and were rewarded in the end. This qualification means everything to Ugandan football."
The victory places Uganda in Group D of the AFCON finals, alongside Egypt, Ghana, and Madagascar. The tournament will be held next January.
This marks Uganda's 8th appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, with their best performance being a runner-up finish in 1978.
