Ugandan Coffee Exports Hit Record High Despite Global Challenges

Uganda's coffee exports have reached an all-time high in the last quarter, with the country shipping over 2.5 million 60kg bags worth approximately $630 million. This record performance comes despite significant global supply chain disruptions and climate-related challenges affecting many agricultural producers worldwide.

Factors Behind the Success

The Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) attributes this success to several factors:

• Increased planting of high-yielding coffee varieties over the past five years
• Improved farming practices adopted by smallholder farmers
• Strategic market diversification beyond traditional European buyers
• Favorable weather conditions in key growing regions

Emmanuel Iyamulemye, Managing Director of UCDA, stated, "This achievement demonstrates the resilience of Uganda's coffee sector and the effectiveness of our long-term development strategy."

The growth in exports has been particularly strong to emerging markets, with significant increases in shipments to China, Russia, and Middle Eastern countries. These markets now account for approximately 35% of Uganda's coffee exports, up from just 15% five years ago.

The record exports have brought welcome foreign exchange revenue to Uganda's economy and benefited thousands of smallholder farmers who grow most of the country's coffee.

Industry experts predict continued strong performance for Ugandan coffee exports, though they caution that climate change remains a significant long-term challenge for the sector.
